Where the text comes from
It is not nonsense. The passage is scrambled Latin from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC - a treatise on ethics. The familiar opening is a fragment of a longer sentence beginning "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet", roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain".
Printers have used it as specimen text since the 1500s. It reached modern design through Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s and then desktop publishing software in the 1980s, which is why it appears in essentially every design tool today.
Why scrambled Latin rather than English
The point is that it must be unreadable. If the placeholder text says something, everyone in the review reads it and comments on it, and nobody looks at the layout. Meaningless text keeps attention on typography - line length, leading, rag, hierarchy, the grey texture of a paragraph at a given size.
Latin also has a letter distribution and word-length pattern close enough to English and other European languages that a paragraph occupies believable space. Filler that is all short words looks visually wrong.
When placeholder text is the wrong choice
Lorem ipsum is a typography tool. Used beyond that, it hides problems until they are expensive to fix.
- Content-driven designs. If the design depends on what the content says - a landing page, a pricing table, a dashboard - lorem ipsum lets you approve a layout that real copy will not fit. Real headlines are longer and less tidy than the placeholder ones.
- Client presentations. Clients read the Latin, ask what it means, and lose confidence. Draft copy, even rough, gets a better conversation.
- Testing edge cases. Lorem ipsum is uniformly polite: no very long words, no empty fields, no all-caps company names, no CJK text. Test with awkward real data too.
- Anything that might ship. Lorem ipsum reaches production more often than anyone admits - it is worth grepping for before release.
The considered position, argued by content strategists for years, is to design with real or realistic content wherever possible and use lorem ipsum only for pure typographic work.
Alternatives
Themed generators exist for when a project can carry some personality: Bacon Ipsum, Hipster Ipsum, Corporate Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum and many more. They read as English, which cuts both ways - more engaging in an internal review, more distracting when you are judging a paragraph's colour on the page.
For interface work, a set of realistic strings is usually better than any of them: actual product names, real-length email addresses, genuine dates. If you need volumes of structured filler, combine this with the random generator.
Frequently asked questions
Not as written - it is deliberately scrambled. The source is Cicero's De Finibus, a first-century BC work on ethics, so individual words are real Latin but the passage does not read as coherent prose.
Only if it ships. A published page of placeholder text is thin content with no value to a reader, and search engines treat it accordingly. It is harmless in a private mockup.
Three to five paragraphs shows body copy behaviour. For layout work, generate slightly more than you expect to need - real content is almost always longer than the placeholder you designed with.
Yes. The text is from a 2,000-year-old work in the public domain and carries no restrictions.
Nothing you enter here leaves your browser
Lorem Ipsum Generator does its work in JavaScript running on your own device. The page loads once, and after that there is no upload step and no server involved — which matters here because unpublished drafts, contracts and internal documents stay on your machine.
You can verify this rather than taking our word for it: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working. Our privacy policy sets out what is and is not collected, and this guide explains why the distinction matters.
